Warm with wool
Think twice before tossing those old wool
sweaters—use them to make a custom
chair cover. Throw sweaters in the
washing machine and set to a hot-wash,
cool-rinse cycle, then run through the
dryer to felt them (the edges won’t fray).
Cut about 12 pieces of varying sizes, then
use a sewing machine to sew into a
patchwork design. Make enough to cover
the chair. For added charm, cut circles
from felt, making each circle smaller than
the previous. Cut petal shapes in toward
the center of each circle and tack together
to construct the flower, above. Sew the
flower and felt stem to the cover before
stretching it over the chair and stapling in
place to complete, left.
Cut and paste
Take advantage of fabric you already
own, or scour the remnant stacks at your
local fabrics store for designs you love,
to adorn a plain slipcover, left. Adhere
iron-on adhesive sheets to the back of
your fabric, following manufacturer’s
directions. Cut out your favorite design
elements (say, a blooming flower or
knobby t wig), discarding the excess,
above. Arrange your finds on a plain
chair or slipcover, and press to adhere.
